Sighting in Saint-Claude, December 7, 1977

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on December 7, 1977 in Saint-Claude (Jura, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 6:45 p.m., several people saw a luminous phenomenon cross the sky from west to east. No particular noise was heard as it passed. It first appeared as an elongated shape giving off a white light. Further along its path, the shape gave way to a red point of light, which gradually faded until it disappeared.

During the investigation, the gendarmerie found no trace on the ground that could be linked to the phenomenon's passage. One of the witnesses also reported having seen, three days earlier at around 10:15 p.m., an orange ball crossing the sky.

These accounts resemble descriptions of atmospheric re-entries. However, the information available about these phenomena is too imprecise to confirm that hypothesis. The case was therefore classified C, for insufficient data.
