Sighting in Saint-Jorioz, July 4, 2015
Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on July 4, 2015 in Saint-Jorioz (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a planet (class A).
What happened
Every evening from 9:45 pm, the witness saw a bright point of light in the sky, soon followed by a second, dimmer one. The source does not say how long this had been going on. The two points drifted slowly together, then vanished behind the landscape.
Such long, repeated sightings of lights in the sky immediately suggest an ordinary astronomical cause, such as stars or planets. The GEIPAN checked the witness's line of sight against a sky chart, which showed Venus and Jupiter exactly in that direction. The investigation noted that the witness, who has a high level of university education, had not thought of this explanation on their own and seemed to have been too strongly influenced by TV programmes about UFOs. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness had observed Venus and Jupiter.
