What happened
At about 7:10 a.m., a farmer out hunting noticed a red glow in the distance for a few seconds and took it for a chimney fire. From a spot overlooking the landscape, the witness then saw a twinkling light heading toward them on an east-to-west path. When it was ten to fifteen metres from the hunter, it changed direction, and the witness realised they were looking at an elongated, cylindrical object about two metres long. The object hung motionless roughly ten metres above the ground, with an intermittent red glow spreading all around it. It then moved off silently toward the south, stopped, set off again and disappeared behind the landscape. The sighting was close but short, lasting 8 to 10 seconds.
The gendarmerie investigation found no other witnesses and no traces in the area the witness described the object passing through. GEIPAN notes how hard it is to investigate such an old case after the fact. The aircraft hypothesis was not retained. The case remains unexplained (class D). It has low consistency because it rests on a single witness, but a high degree of strangeness. Under GEIPAN's current classification, it is a PAN D1.
