Sighting in Saint-Junien, February 19, 2022

Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France

Sighting on February 19, 2022 in Saint-Junien (Haute-Vienne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a weather phenomenon (storm, lightning, cloud…) (class B).

What happened

At around 12:15 p.m., a motorist who was driving noticed a phenomenon in the sky that they described as a "singularity". The sky was heavily overcast, with a low cloud ceiling. The witness saw four motionless lights of an extremely intense white, which seemed to twinkle and pulse. They also made out a segment of matte, silvery-grey material emerging from the clouds, in the place the lights were coming from.

The vehicle had a dashcam that records all of its journeys, so the sequence was captured on video. GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as good: there was only one witness, but the footage backed up the account.

The investigation concluded that the witness most probably saw gaps in the cloud layer, and that the video fully accounts for what they saw. The twinkling of the lights and the silvery-grey segment, which made the sighting seem strange, were probably caused by changes in brightness and by movement within the clouds. Examination of the footage also showed that the phenomenon was visible at times well before the witness reached the roundabout, and looked no different from the other gaps in the clouds. GEIPAN classified the case B: very probably gaps in the clouds and reflections of the sun on them.
