Sighting in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois, September 5, 2009

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on September 5, 2009 in Sainte-Geneviève-des-Bois (Essonne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., during a street meal, several people saw a luminous object cross the sky without making any sound. One of the witnesses described an orange-colored ball that first moved slowly, then suddenly sped off toward the south, still in silence.

According to the GEIPAN, the features of the sighting match a well-known phenomenon that is frequently reported: the passage of a luminous flying lantern, often called a Thai lantern. A fireworks display nearby, which points to festivities in the area, considerably strengthens this explanation. The case was therefore classified B, as a probable sighting of a luminous flying lantern.
