Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on December 7, 1976 in Sainte-Maxime (Var, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At about 5:45 p.m., a bus driver and several schoolchildren saw a moving, spherical, luminous phenomenon in the sky. They watched it on two separate occasions. The object was very bright and was over the sea. It moved slowly toward the land and then vanished.

One of the possibilities considered during the investigation was that the witnesses had seen an astronomical object. However, no further precise information could be gathered about the phenomenon. Because of this lack of information, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data).
