Sighting in Volx, August 8, 2012

Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on August 8, 2012 in Volx (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

A witness was lying on a terrace looking at the starry sky when they noticed an object they did not recognise. They followed it for about 5 seconds. It moved in a straight line from the northeast to the southwest and made no sound. It was shaped like a weaver's shuttle, brown-green in colour, with fuzzy edges. At its centre, the witness made out a dark red round shape. The whole thing looked very blurred, but it remained visible because it blocked out the background sky. As it travelled, its long axis was perpendicular to its direction of motion. Only one witness account was collected.

The GEIPAN investigation took several points into account: the object's shape and appearance; a speed and trajectory inconsistent with a passive object pushed by the wind present that day at that hour; and an estimated speed, altitude or size inconsistent with a motorised craft, particularly as no noise was heard. The phenomenon therefore resembles no known object or phenomenon. The case is classified D (D1), unidentified phenomenon. The testimony is judged to be of good consistency, being precise and detailed, but the sighting was made from a distance, by a single witness, and without a photograph. GEIPAN describes it as strange because of the object's unusual appearance, which is hard to compare with anything known.
