Sighting in Sali, September 14, 1959

Algeria

Sighting on September 14, 1959 in Sali (Algeria). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

Three witnesses south of the town noticed an orange glowing object in the sky early in the morning, around 5:10-5:15 a.m., and were intrigued by its movements. At about 5:30 a.m. it came to a stop. For the next 40 minutes they watched it drift slowly toward the northeast, often changing in appearance and colour, with red at one end. They were using binoculars. They noticed no trail and no sound. The observation lasted about an hour in total. Only one account was collected, with two sketches showing how the object evolved and changed shape.

The report also mentions another observation made two days earlier, around 7 p.m.: an orange phenomenon with the apparent size of a star, very high in the sky, moving at great speed from 180° to 360° in about 30 seconds, with no particular sound. Again, only one account exists.

GEIPAN classed the case B. For the first observation, the long duration, the slow movement and the time of day, close to sunrise, point to a balloon lit by the rising sun. The directions of observation and movement are not precisely known. For the 12 September observation, GEIPAN suggests a meteoroid: a brief sighting of an elongated, orange, luminous phenomenon moving very fast at very high altitude.
