Sighting in Salins-les-Thermes, August 23, 1980

Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on August 23, 1980 in Salins-les-Thermes (Savoie, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 9:30 a.m., from their home, the witness first noticed a flash of lightning. Shortly afterwards, something caught their attention: a very bright, spherical flying object moving across the sky.

As it neared a mountain range, the object tipped onto its edge and turned red. It then quickly vanished behind the landscape, heading north.

No other witness account was gathered about this phenomenon. Because of the lack of information, GEIPAN classified the case as C (insufficient data); its conclusion describes the observation of a spherical craft.
