Sighting in Montchaboud, July 26, 2012

Isère, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on July 26, 2012 in Montchaboud (Isère, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At around 10:20 pm, a witness standing on their balcony saw a faint, vaporous ball cross the clear sky quickly and without a sound. It moved from south to north. The witness noticed points of light beneath the object and several small jets of trail behind it. The sighting lasted about 6 seconds, until the object disappeared behind the roof of the house. No other witness came forward.

The witness wrote their account immediately after the sighting, and the GEIPAN considers it very precise, well documented and of high quality. The straight-line path makes the case only moderately strange in itself, but the highly unusual appearance of the phenomenon adds to the strangeness. Several hypotheses were examined, since the phenomenon resembled various possible causes, but none fitted well. The testimony remains a single one, with no photo or video. The GEIPAN could not confirm any of the hypotheses and classified the case D1: unexplained phenomenon.
