Sighting in Sierentz, November 9, 2021
Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France
Sighting on November 9, 2021 in Sierentz (Haut-Rhin, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).
What happened
At around 7:00 p.m., the witness was driving when they saw, through the windscreen, three fixed white-blue lights forming a triangle pass directly overhead. The phenomenon remained visible for less than 30 seconds. The witness heard no noise. The object moved off toward the north-northeast, changing course slightly. After getting home, the witness saw and heard two fighter jets heading toward where the object had supposedly gone.
GEIPAN considered the account precise, but it was a single testimony with no photo or video, so the case's consistency was rated as medium. The investigation concluded that the witness most probably saw a military A400M aircraft from air base 123 at Orléans-Bricy, taking part in a very-low-altitude exercise south of air base 132 at Colmar. The aircraft's presence there at that time was confirmed, as part of major French Air Force exercises. It was flying in "stealth mode", at reduced speed with as few lights on as possible: the three lights could have been its two landing lights and one marker light on the side of the fuselage. Its slow apparent movement fits this reduced speed, which the witness, themselves in motion, could hardly judge.
The silence is explained by the viewing conditions: the witness was in a moving vehicle, with the windows initially closed, and the aircraft was flying slowly. The light, variable wind was not a factor. The triangular shape was only the pattern of the three lights; at night, the dark aircraft showed no visible propellers or tail. The case was classified A.
