Sighting in Sondernach, January 31, 1979

Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on January 31, 1979 in Sondernach (Haut-Rhin, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Between 11:15 p.m. and 12:30 a.m., two witnesses noticed two unusual lights in the sky. At times the two sources seemed to be connected by a cluster of very bright, multicolored streamers. The observation was not continuous, and the phenomenon vanished completely at around 1 a.m.

No other witness account was gathered about the event. The police report wrongly gave the month as January, when the sighting actually took place in December. Because the data were insufficient, GEIPAN classified the case as C: the investigation could only record the observation of two sources of light and could not say more.
