Sighting in Sélestat, October 30, 1994

Bas-Rhin, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 30, 1994 in Sélestat (Bas-Rhin, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At about 1:45 a.m., a couple driving in their car noticed a luminous circle spinning on itself, with evenly spaced lights around its edge. It hovered motionless above the vehicle at an estimated height of 5 to 6 metres.

The car quickly left the town, but a little further on the witnesses found the phenomenon ahead of them again. A triangle had been added to the circle: it was equilateral, roughly 10 metres on each side, at an altitude of 10 to 15 metres, and carried the same kind of lights along its outline. The whole thing accompanied the car, which was travelling at about 80 km/h, matching its speed over several kilometres. When the vehicle changed direction, the object accelerated and moved away; the witnesses then said it had been shaped like a boomerang.

During the same time window and on the same road, another couple in a different car described the phenomenon in strikingly similar terms, with the same movements relative to the vehicle. The phenomenon could not be explained. The GEIPAN concluded that it was a UFO that appeared to follow the witnesses, and classified the case D (unexplained).
