Sighting in Staffelfelden, February 10, 2018
Haut-Rhin, Grand Est, France
Sighting on February 10, 2018 in Staffelfelden (Haut-Rhin, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a meteor or fireball (class B).
What happened
The witness was finishing a bicycle round shortly before seven in the morning when they saw two very bright white balls surrounded by a halo in the sky. The objects moved quickly and silently from east to west, leaving a short trail behind them. The sighting lasted about 5 seconds. There was only one witness and no photo of the phenomenon, so the GEIPAN rated the case's consistency as medium.
The investigation found that the description closely matches a fireball (bolide), given the very high speed and the brief visibility. A fireball had been reported the same day from Colmar, a nearby town, on a similar trajectory. The two accounts differ, however, in colour, brightness and the absence of fragmentation, and their times are about 50 minutes apart. That gap could come from the Colmar witness confusing local time with universal time, combined with a late estimate, off by about 20 minutes, from the Staffelfelden witness. These errors cannot be verified. The zigzag seen at the end of the path could be explained by an autokinetic effect, or by the witness moving their head as they followed the fireball passing overhead. The case was classified B: probable observation of a fireball.
