Sighting in Thônes, September 26, 2009

Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on September 26, 2009 in Thônes (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness contacted the GEIPAN by email to report an unusual object they had seen in the sky during the local Saint-Maurice agricultural fair. The object appeared to spin on itself. The witness attached two photographs to the message.

However, they did not fill in the investigation questionnaire and did not reply to requests for further details. It is therefore unknown whether anyone else saw the phenomenon.

According to the investigation, only the shape of the object was strange: the way it moved resembled that of a balloon, in other words an object lighter than air. The account was too thin to support a firm conclusion unless more details about the sighting could be obtained. The case was classified C because of insufficient information.

Account rewritten by SkyUnknown from the investigation report published by GEIPAN (CNES). The original text and case documents are on the official record.
