Sighting on August 23, 2012 in Toulon (Var, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a balloon (class B).

What happened

At around 9:15 p.m., three people noticed a dark, rectangular object in the sky above the houses. It was moving slowly from south to north. No sound was heard at any point during the sighting, which lasted about three minutes.

No other account of the phenomenon was ever reported to the GEIPAN. After a thorough investigation, the explanation adopted was that the witnesses probably saw a kite. However, neither its owner nor the kite itself has been found to date. The case was classified B (probably identified).
