Sighting in Tubuai, June 13, 1990

France

Sighting on June 13, 1990 in Tubuai (France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

Between 8 p.m. and midnight, two independent witnesses saw luminous phenomena. The first was out walking toward a mountain when they saw six luminous discs lighting up the marshes. They heard no noise. Around midnight, the discs moved off toward the northwest. The second witness, in a different locality, had their attention drawn to three white lights near the mountain.

The gendarmerie's report is vague, incomplete and often at odds with what the main witness later said in another document, notably regarding the direction of observation, the shape of the objects, whether other witnesses were present, and whether the objects were on the ground or in the air. In that second document, the witness suggested army helicopters, a possibility that could be neither confirmed nor ruled out so long afterward. The investigation also lacks geographic data: neither the witness's position, nor the objects' position, nor their path as they disappeared can be established. What the second witness saw is equally imprecise and is not necessarily linked to the first witness's sighting.

The case, originally classed D, was re-examined. Because reliable information is lacking, nothing strange or unexplained can be established, and GEIPAN classed it C.
