Sighting in Vidauban, March 15, 2008
Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on March 15, 2008 in Vidauban (Var, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
Two witnesses saw a luminous phenomenon between 10:20 and 10:30 p.m., which they described as a "ball of fire". It passed three times, one after the other, and each pass was completely silent. The witness spoke of a twinkling ball.
The investigation noted several consistent points: the spacing between the passes, a movement in line with the prevailing wind direction, which was blowing from the east, and the time and day of the sighting, a Saturday evening. All of these fit Thai lanterns.
GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: the witnesses most probably saw three Thai lanterns.
