Sighting in Villefranche-sur-Mer, November 26, 2009
Alpes-Maritimes, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France
Sighting on November 26, 2009 in Villefranche-sur-Mer (Alpes-Maritimes, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
At around 10:45 p.m., two people saw about a dozen objects pass silently across a clear sky. Each was square, with a white light at its center. The witness also described two wings. The sighting lasted about a minute and a half, and the objects moved from west to east. Only one account was collected, on 13 October 2014.
The investigation compared the scene to Thai lanterns, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. Luminous objects crossing the sky in a few minutes fit that kind of lantern well. The shape described, square with a central point of light and two wings, may be an interpretation of the barrel shape of classic Thai lanterns, or it may be the actual shape of some particular lanterns. The direction of travel is consistent with the northwesterly wind recorded by the weather station in Nice. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of Thai lanterns.
