Sighting in Villemomble, February 11, 2013
Seine-Saint-Denis, Île-de-France, France
Sighting on February 11, 2013 in Villemomble (Seine-Saint-Denis, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).
What happened
The witness regularly saw yellow lights to the southeast that appeared, moved slightly and then vanished. They had seen them many times over January and the beginning of February.
The investigation showed that this direction matches the area where, when the wind blows from the west or northwest, aircraft coming from the south line up with the runway at Orly airfield. The witness was only seeing the aircraft's landing lights, which are highly directional and therefore visible only when the plane is heading straight toward the observer. At a distance of about 20 km, the red and green position lights, or even the flashing lights, could not be made out. The witness saw nothing on 12 and 13 February, when the wind was from the northeast or south and the approach to Orly was made from the west.
GEIPAN classified the case as B: the lights were probably airliners on approach before landing. The witness could identify the aircraft in real time using an air traffic tracking website.
