Sighting in Vinneuf, September 6, 2025
Yonne, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France
Sighting on September 6, 2025 in Vinneuf (Yonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the Moon (class A).
What happened
At around 5 a.m., a witness at home noticed a glow on the horizon to the southwest that looked like a sunrise or a sunset. Intrigued, the witness took several photos with a smartphone and then stopped watching. The case was rated as having good consistency and low strangeness.
The investigation used the photographs to compare them with the state of the sky at that moment, relying on the Stellarium simulation software. It showed that the Moon lay exactly along the witness's line of sight, at an elevation of about 1°, meaning right at the horizon. It was the eve of the full moon and the Moon was very bright, but the witness could not see it: it was too low and hidden by vegetation and houses. What struck the witness was the luminous shape it cast onto the clouds. Unable to see the actual source of light, the witness took it for an unidentified aerial phenomenon. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of the setting Moon.
