Sighting in Viry-Châtillon, July 23, 1993

Essonne, Île-de-France, France

Sighting on July 23, 1993 in Viry-Châtillon (Essonne, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about twenty past midnight, a witness was looking out of a window at a cloudy sky. They noticed five luminous halos, each about 1.5 m in apparent size, revolving around one another while keeping the same distance between them. The witness's mother also saw the phenomenon.

After a while, one of the halos moved away very quickly, while the other four kept rotating. The phenomenon made no sound and lasted about fifteen minutes.

The investigation favoured the hypothesis of distant searchlights. GEIPAN classified the case as B, probably identified, with the conclusion that the witness had observed luminous halos.
