Sighting in Void-Vacon, July 13, 1976

Meuse, Grand Est, France

Sighting on July 13, 1976 in Void-Vacon (Meuse, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

At about 5:45 a.m., two witnesses who were finishing a night shift at a quarry suddenly saw a white sphere appear in the sky. It hung motionless and gradually grew larger. It stayed visible for four to five seconds and then vanished. The witnesses heard no sound.

The gendarmerie investigation established that they were standing at the highest point in the area, with a very wide field of view. The weather was sunny and there were no clouds. The phenomenon was located directly above the Vaucouleurs hillside, about 8 km away.

GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified): given the date and time, the witnesses most likely saw a reflection of the sun, which had only just risen.
