Sighting in 44.76°, -4.32°, July 3, 1990
France
Sighting at sea on July 3, 1990 in 44.76°, -4.32° (France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).
What happened
The witness was at sea on their sailboat, off the Spanish coast, at around 10:30 pm. While at the helm, they watched a luminous oval object moving about in the sky for a little over 30 seconds. It showed a red light on one side and a blue-green light on the other. The witness heard no particular sound and noticed no disturbance on board: the engine was running and the boat's navigation lights were working normally. They went to the gendarmerie station seventeen days later, on 20 July 1990.
The investigation concluded that the witness very probably saw an aircraft, most likely on a night approach to a Spanish airport with its landing lights on. The red and blue-green lights match an aircraft's navigation lights, and the bright oval light matches two landing lights set close together and aligned horizontally, seen from a distance. The absence of white anti-collision lights could be explained by weather conditions in which they are switched off, which can be neither confirmed nor ruled out. The maneuvers described (loops, turns) are consistent with an airport approach, and the boat's engine noise, or the wind, may have masked the sound of the aircraft. Thirty years on, no traffic recordings are available. The case has low consistency, but the hypothesis is probable enough that GEIPAN classified it as A, after re-examining an initial D classification.
