Sighting in Annecy, July 20, 1979
Haute-Savoie, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on July 20, 1979 in Annecy (Haute-Savoie, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).
What happened
At around 10 a.m., several people noticed a bright shape in the sky and watched it for about twenty minutes. The witnesses described an egg-shaped object whose apparent size depended on where they stood, ranging from 80 cm to 5 m across, and whose colour looked metallic or black. It first hung motionless above a house, then rose and gradually moved away without making any sound.
The gendarmerie reported that the airfields and bases in the region had not signalled anything unusual, and that no advertising object had been flown during that period. Even so, the witnesses' description of the object and its movement is very close to that of a balloon. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, probably identified: a round object slowly descending and rising.
