Sighting in Apt, July 2, 2010

Vaucluse, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, France

Sighting on July 2, 2010 in Apt (Vaucluse, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class A).

What happened

Three witnesses were out on a balcony at about 10:45 pm when they noticed luminous phenomena in the sky passing over the town. The lights moved across the sky and changed direction abruptly. The observation lasted roughly half an hour, and a loud propulsion noise could be heard throughout.

The investigation found that the Patrouille de France flies a night display in the region every first Friday of July, a fact confirmed by the CNOA. The witnesses' account matches this event fairly well. GEIPAN classified the case as A (identified): the lights seen were those of the Patrouille de France flight.

Account rewritten by SkyUnknown from the investigation report published by GEIPAN (CNES). The original text and case documents are on the official record.
