Sighting in Arronnes, May 31, 2019
Allier, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
Sighting on May 31, 2019 in Arronnes (Allier, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the International Space Station (ISS) (class A).
What happened
At around 11 p.m., a witness standing on an outdoor terrace noticed a white point of light in the sky. It moved slowly from west to east. The witness called out to a friend, who also saw the light. Its brightness gradually faded until it vanished, but the witness had managed to film it. The following evening, at around 10 p.m., the witness saw the same phenomenon again, in the same direction and along the same path.
On 2 June 2019, when giving a statement at the gendarmerie, the witness showed their short video. The gendarmes did see a white circle against a black background. The witness later lost the recording, so it could not be attached to the report. Only one testimony was collected.
GEIPAN classified the case A: a misidentification of the International Space Station. The very bright white point closely matches how the ISS looks, and the station made passes on the evenings of 31 May and 1 June 2019 at times consistent with the sightings. Its west-to-east path, passing south of the observation site, matches the one described. The decisive factor is the light's gradual disappearance along its path, typical of the ISS entering the Earth's shadow, which did happen during both passes.
