Sighting in Bagnères-de-Bigorre, August 25, 1980

Hautes-Pyrénées, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 25, 1980 in Bagnères-de-Bigorre (Hautes-Pyrénées, France). GEIPAN considers the phenomenon probably identified (class B).

What happened

Between 9:25 and 10:00 p.m., several witnesses noticed a luminous phenomenon in the sky. It looked like a coloured circle and moved without any particular noise being heard. The witnesses who were in town lost sight of it when buildings hid it from view. The sighting was very brief, but the witnesses stated that the object gave off beams of light.

The Pic du Midi observatory was contacted and had noted nothing out of the ordinary. GEIPAN concluded that the witnesses had most probably seen an atmospheric re-entry, and the case was classified B (probably identified).
