Sighting on May 16, 2022 in Arbus (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).
What happened
At 11:26 pm, three people were driving along the D2 toward Mourenx when they noticed four warm-white points of light in the clear sky. The lights seemed to be lined up and motionless. After about two minutes of observation, the phenomenon vanished suddenly.
Only one of the three witnesses gave a statement, and their technical questionnaire lacked detail. No photos or videos were provided. Despite repeated follow-ups, no azimuth, elevation or size could be obtained.
GEIPAN looked at several possibilities. Lights close to the ground, such as stadium floodlights, work on a high-voltage line or farm vehicles, were considered because of the alignment, the possible lack of movement and the fact that the witnesses were themselves moving. The floodlights of the Siros stadium were confirmed to be off at the time, and RTE, which operates the high-voltage line lying in the line of sight, reported no work on that date. An artificial atmospheric re-entry was also suggested, but the CNES Space Operations Surveillance Centre found nothing in its databases matching the phenomenon. Because of the lack of data, the case was classified C: it cannot be identified.
