Sighting in Balan, May 1, 2022

Ain, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France

Sighting on May 1, 2022 in Balan (Ain, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a planet (class A).

What happened

At around 5:30 a.m., two people travelling by car noticed distant points of light and kept them in view for the whole journey. Some larger points were at the top, with smaller ones following. They seemed motionless and did not twinkle.

On arrival, around 6:05 a.m., one of the witnesses took photographs. The lights were in the east, at an elevation of roughly 30 to 45° above the horizon. Two or three pictures taken a little later, around 6:20 a.m., showed only two points left. They were arranged differently, but their position relative to each other had not changed. They seemed to be moving toward the south. As daylight came up, they became harder to make out.

GEIPAN judged the case to be well substantiated: it rested on a single account, but a fairly complete one, with six photographs. The investigation established that the witnesses had seen the conjunction of Jupiter and Venus, two particularly bright planets that day. The witness's description, the relative position of the two points and the azimuth all matched these planets perfectly between 5:30 and 6:20 a.m. The case was therefore classified A.
