What happened

At around 2:30 in the morning, several people noticed a bright, silvery shape in the sky. The witnesses described what they saw as an explosion of light. The phenomenon vanished instantly, and no sound was heard.

That same night, gendarmerie patrols observed lightning flashes coming from distant thunderstorms. GEIPAN classified the case as B: the witnesses most likely saw a luminous effect associated with this stormy weather, in other words brief flashes of light.
