Sighting in Besançon, April 2, 2011

Doubs, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on April 2, 2011 in Besançon (Doubs, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Several people reported that around 11 p.m. they had seen a large number of orange balls crossing the sky above the town. The balls moved together in a group and made no sound, then vanished all at once.

The investigation found that these descriptions matched Thai lanterns: orange lights that drift with the wind and last less than twenty minutes. Another release took place a week later, as mentioned in a local newspaper article dated 11 April 2011 included in the report. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: the identification is very probable, but the people behind the release were never found.
