Sighting in Évans, June 2, 2014

Jura, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, France

Sighting on June 2, 2014 in Évans (Jura, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10:45 p.m., three friends were looking out of a window when they saw a reddish-orange ball pass across a clear sky. It moved at a steady speed and no sound was heard. The sighting lasted three to four minutes.

A Thai lantern carried by the wind was considered, given the duration and the look of a large glow resembling a fireball. The Météociel record for Besançon showed a very light northerly wind. However, lantern releases are rare on weekdays, and the fact that only one luminous object was seen does not help support this idea. The weak, unstable wind also made it impossible to confirm that the object was drifting with it.

The case has low strangeness, since it resembles a known phenomenon. In addition, more than eight months passed between the events and the report reaching GEIPAN, so a field investigation was not justified. Because of the lack of information, GEIPAN classified the case "C".
