Sighting in Bessay, August 28, 2015

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on August 28, 2015 in Bessay (Vendée, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

On a Friday evening, between 9:00 and 9:15 pm, four people in a garden noticed two orange lights in the sky. One seemed motionless, due west. The other was moving and came from the north-west. The two lights then disappeared one after the other toward the south-west. The observation lasted one minute and no sound was heard. The witness had time to take four photographs. Only one witness account was collected, by the gendarmerie.

Analysis of the photo series, described in the investigation note, showed with good probability two Thai lanterns drifting with the wind. The sighting took place on a Friday evening, a day well suited to weekend festivities (weddings, various parties) at which such lanterns may be released. The GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B: probable Thai lanterns.
