Sighting in Les Sables-d'Olonne, July 4, 1997

Vendée, Pays de la Loire, France

Sighting on July 4, 1997 in Les Sables-d'Olonne (Vendée, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).

What happened

At about 4 a.m., a witness was at the helm of a sailboat when they noticed a very bright glow. It dropped quickly for two to three seconds, hung still for a short while, then shot off horizontally at great speed and vanished within roughly two or three seconds.

The witness then woke their two crewmates, who had been asleep, to tell them what they had just seen. It was at that moment that all three saw a second phenomenon: a diamond-shaped object, ochre yellow, with lights at its corners. It moved very fast at cloud level and disappeared after ten to fifteen seconds.

The investigation could not explain these two successive luminous phenomena, and the case is classified D (unexplained).
