Sighting in Béthune, June 2, 2013

Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on June 2, 2013 in Béthune (Pas-de-Calais, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).

What happened

Shortly after midnight, four people were in the living room of an apartment when they saw six luminous shapes crossing the sky. The objects moved in complete silence, travelling from the north toward the south-southeast according to the account. The sighting lasted at least a minute. Only one statement was collected from the group.

GEIPAN considered that lights crossing the sky over a few minutes on a weekend night strongly suggest Thai lanterns, most likely released nearby at the end of a private party. The direction of travel, from north to south-southwest in the analysis, matches the north wind recorded at Lille. The case was therefore rated B, probable sighting of Thai lanterns. When told of this explanation, the witness did not accept it.
