Sighting in Biars-sur-Cère, June 6, 2014

Lot, Occitanie, France

Sighting on June 6, 2014 in Biars-sur-Cère (Lot, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a bright star (class B).

What happened

Between June 2014 and December 2015, the witness repeatedly scanned the sky with binoculars and a telescope. They reported several sightings of coloured spheres, visible only on starry nights. The spheres, which showed several colours, moved slightly. The witness gave a detailed account of one long observation on 6 June 2014, which lasted about 30 minutes. No other testimony was collected.

The investigation found that the length of the observation, its repetition, the slow movement of the points of light and their multicoloured look through binoculars or the telescope pointed to stars twinkling strongly at low height in the sky. According to the sky chart for the period, the stars involved could have been Capella, Vega or Deneb. The effect the witness described may also have come from the telescope being incorrectly adjusted. GEIPAN classified the case as B: probable observation of particularly scintillating stars at low elevation.
