Sighting in Martiel, August 19, 2011

Aveyron, Occitanie, France

Sighting on August 19, 2011 in Martiel (Aveyron, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

One evening, between 10:45 and 11:00 pm, a witness out for a walk noticed what they described as a "very large star" in the sky. It was at first stationary, then climbed rapidly to the zenith, where it vanished. The observation lasted about 10 seconds, and the witness heard no particular noise.

The investigation compared the account to the appearance of a satellite: a very bright point in the night sky early in the night that disappears suddenly resembles a satellite passing into the Earth's shadow. The International Space Station (ISS) was visible that evening, but the testimony lacks the precision needed to confirm that it was what the witness saw. The impression that the object disappeared at the zenith was probably an optical illusion, which is common when a bright point of light vanishes abruptly. GEIPAN classified the case as C, because there was not enough information for a precise investigation.
