Sighting in Bolide — Toulouse, September 15, 2014

Haute-Garonne, Occitanie, France

Sighting on September 15, 2014 in Bolide — Toulouse (Haute-Garonne, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

A luminous phenomenon with a trail crossed the sky quickly. GEIPAN received accounts from three people, two in Toulouse and one in Gleize, in the Rhône department. Seven further reports reached GEIPAN over the following days. The GEIPAN camera in Toulouse recorded it for more than 10 seconds. From Toulouse, it crossed the southern horizon from west to east at a low elevation, between 10° and 0° according to the camera. Many witnesses also noticed it in the Perpignan area, and the local press covered it.

According to the investigation, the event took place at roughly 60 to 25 km altitude and ended above the Mediterranean. It lasted a relatively long time because its path was nearly parallel to the Earth's surface, unlike the 7 September fireball, which followed a much steeper path. Space debris was ruled out: no re-entry was known at that time, and the speed was too high for an object in Earth orbit.

GEIPAN classified the case as A: a large fireball resulting from the entry of a meteoroid, a small rocky body orbiting the Sun, into the atmosphere. The many testimonies and the camera recordings make the case very consistent, and after analysis it appears to have very little strangeness.
