Sighting in Bourges, October 26, 1980

Cher, Centre-Val de Loire, France

Sighting on October 26, 1980 in Bourges (Cher, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10:35 a.m., from their property, a witness who was an amateur pilot noticed several flashes of light in the sky, which reminded them of the rotating beacon of an aircraft. They then saw a very bright flame, followed by black smoke. They heard no sound.

Believing it was a plane crash, the witness alerted the nearest control tower. The gendarmerie investigation found no aircraft in difficulty in the area, and no rocket launch was recorded in the surrounding region. No other witness account was collected.

GEIPAN classified the case as C, because there was not enough information: the observation amounted to flashes of light in the sky, followed by a flame and smoke.
