Sighting in Brienne-sur-Aisne, October 31, 2025

Ardennes, Grand Est, France

Sighting on October 31, 2025 in Brienne-sur-Aisne (Ardennes, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a meteor or fireball (class A).

What happened

The witness was walking their dog along a canal near home at 10:01 pm when they saw a luminous sphere in the sky for 3 to 5 seconds. It was surrounded by a halo of sparks and followed by a long bright trail. The very bright object, predominantly between white and gold in color, moved quickly and silently along a curved path from the northeast toward the northwest, at about 45° elevation. Neither its brightness nor its course changed. The witness estimated its size at 3 cm at arm's length. It vanished abruptly, as if it went out or moved away very fast, leaving no luminous trace. The witness thought of a "big meteorite" and remarked that they could not be the only one to have seen it.

The testimony has medium consistency: there was a single witness and no photo or video. Neither the GEIPAN nor the IMO/AMS received any other report. However, automated cameras of the FRIPON network recorded two events at 21:01 UTC (22:01 local time), one from Libin in Belgium and the other from Oostkapelle in the Netherlands. Their viewing directions, particularly that from Oostkapelle, are consistent with those given by the witness; the difference can be explained by the very short observation and the difficulty of judging a trajectory.

The only hypothesis examined was that of a fireball, supported by the spherical shape, the white and gold color, the strong brightness, the fast movement on a curved path and the duration of under 5 seconds. The GEIPAN classified the case as A: the witness observed the atmospheric re-entry of a fireball.
