Sighting in Condé-sur-Aisne, August 6, 2015

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on August 6, 2015 in Condé-sur-Aisne (Aisne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

At around 10 p.m., the witness glanced very briefly out of a roof window and saw a grey triangle hanging motionless, with an orange-red light at each corner. The object then left very quickly toward the west, following a straight path. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation noted that this kind of description is often the result of a perceptual illusion known as the illusory contour effect, or Gestalt. What the witness saw was most likely just a group of points of light. The very fast departure could simply have been the lights going out. Possible sources include Thai lanterns, aircraft and satellites. The sighting was too short and the time window too wide for a reasonable investigation. The Météociel record shows a light northerly wind at Reims. Because of the lack of precise information and corroboration, GEIPAN classed the case as C, insufficient data.
