Sighting in Baulne-en-Brie, July 7, 2013

Aisne, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on July 7, 2013 in Baulne-en-Brie (Aisne, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A witness was taking part in a night-sky observation evening. At the end of the session, around 3:10 a.m., they were looking at the starry sky above Montchevret when they saw a white point of light moving. Its path puzzled them: as the point passed directly overhead, it turned through a right angle in less than three seconds and headed toward the hamlet of Romandie. The terrain then hid it from view. The witness noticed no trail and no sound, and no other testimony was collected.

GEIPAN noted that the account seems strange, since a point of light abruptly changed direction and was not an aircraft. One explanation remains possible, however: the bright track of a satellite stops when it leaves the zone lit by the Sun, close to where another satellite, entering that zone, begins its own track. Because the two paths do not continue one another, an observer can come away with the impression of a single object that changed course. The analysis could not go further, as the witness gave incomplete answers, or none at all, to requests for information despite several reminders. In addition, an observation evening organized by a UFO-focused group can affect some participants' objectivity (emulation among attendees, a search for the unusual), sometimes without their knowing it. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as C, for lack of reliable information.
