Sighting in Bruay-la-Buissière, April 13, 2020
Pas-de-Calais, Hauts-de-France, France
Sighting on April 13, 2020 in Bruay-la-Buissière (Pas-de-Calais, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was the atmospheric re-entry of a space object (rocket stage, debris) (class A).
What happened
Two witnesses standing on their balcony at around 4:20 p.m. noticed a white object crossing the sky slowly and silently. They thought it looked like a large jellyfish. It seemed to turn on itself from time to time. It first moved in a straight line, then climbed before disappearing. According to the witness, it did not look like a motorized aircraft or a weather balloon. A photo was taken. Only one account was collected.
The analysis showed that every element of the testimony fits a small, light piece of debris carried by the wind. The object had an irregular, semi-translucent shape, it moved in the direction of the wind, and its size could have been modest even at a distance of 500 m. In the photo, it resembles a plain supermarket bag, such as a plastic produce bag, or a piece of light insulation debris, such as bubble wrap or packing foam. GEIPAN classified the case as A: observation of light debris carried by the wind.
