Sighting in Camphin-en-Carembault, October 5, 2016

Nord, Hauts-de-France, France

Sighting on October 5, 2016 in Camphin-en-Carembault (Nord, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was an animal or natural object (bird, insect, pollen…) (class A).

What happened

At sunrise, a witness noticed three black dots hanging motionless in the sky. They then drew closer together until they formed a cone-shaped figure. When that shape vanished, another one appeared, elongated and white, which stayed visible and motionless until 11:30. The witness took photographs. No one else reported the phenomenon.

The investigation had little to work with: the gendarmerie report was very brief and the questionnaire was left incomplete, so the testimony offered few usable details. Fifteen photographs existed, but only a few were supplied in their original version and could be analysed. Their initial quality was poor. Even so, a multi-temporal analysis using the IPACO software strengthened the hypothesis that was adopted.

GEIPAN concluded that the witness had seen an isolated group of three migrating birds flying toward the southeast. The poor quality of the optics used and the distance made it impossible to make out their shape clearly. The case is classified A, an identified observation: an extremely probable group of birds.
