Sighting in Campsegret, June 1, 2019
Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France
Sighting on June 1, 2019 in Campsegret (Dordogne, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably a sky lantern (class B).
What happened
At around 11:30 pm, a driver saw about thirty white lights moving together across a clear sky. They stopped to watch and, after getting out of the vehicle, heard no sound at all. The lights first showed up toward the north, eventually headed west, and then vanished at the horizon.
The witness contacted the GEIPAN and then the gendarmerie. They had no photo or video, but made drawings of what they had seen. This was the only account collected.
Investigators rated the case as having low strangeness, with a fairly precise testimony despite the lack of other witnesses. They concluded it was very probably a misidentification of a group of Thai lanterns, likely released for a party or a wedding: some thirty points of light flying in a group on a Saturday night, drifting with the wind. The witness had ruled this out after checking online, where the trajectory seemed not to match the wind. They most likely made an error in that check, since the wind was blowing from the east-northeast or the northeast. The GEIPAN classified the case as B (probably identified).
