Sighting in Cancale, November 11, 2014

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on November 11, 2014 in Cancale (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). According to GEIPAN, it was most probably an aircraft (plane, helicopter…) (class B).

What happened

At around 6 a.m., a witness sitting in their camper van by the sea noticed a round, bright white shape. It moved slowly at first, then sped up and began to zigzag while following the coastline. The sighting lasted about twenty minutes, until the phenomenon vanished on the horizon. No other witness account was collected.

The investigation looked at several possibilities: a boat moving in the Bay of Mont-Saint-Michel, a helicopter flying at low altitude along the Granville coast, an aircraft on approach to Granville airport with its landing lights on, or an aircraft flying over the same area with its lights on. The explanation favored was a helicopter, from either the civil security services or the coast guard, equipped with a searchlight. GEIPAN therefore classified the case as B, a probable sighting of such a helicopter flying along the Granville coast.
