Sighting in Saint-Pierre-de-Plesguen, July 25, 2014

Ille-et-Vilaine, Bretagne, France

Sighting on July 25, 2014 in Saint-Pierre-de-Plesguen (Ille-et-Vilaine, France). GEIPAN could not reach a conclusion for lack of sufficient information (class C).

What happened

A motorist driving from north to south saw a vivid, blazing orange-red sphere in the sky at 11:58 pm on a weekend night. The object stayed in view for about a minute above the road. The witness perceived it moving in a straight line from south to north, in the opposite direction to their car.

The investigation found the sighting strongly reminiscent of a Thai lantern, probably released nearby at the end of a private party. However, the apparent direction of travel does not fit the light north wind recorded at Dinard. It is hard to say whether the movement was real or a perspective effect: the object, almost stationary, may have been perceived as much farther away than it really was. The witness rejects the lantern explanation. No other testimony was gathered, and no atmospheric re-entry of space debris or meteoroid was recorded in the area at that time (sources: aerospace and BOAM).

Given these uncertainties about the real movement and the brightness, GEIPAN classified the case C, for lack of precise information and of corroboration.
