Sighting in Dinan, September 7, 1999
Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne, France
Sighting on September 7, 1999 in Dinan (Côtes-d'Armor, France). After investigation, GEIPAN considers this phenomenon unexplained (class D).
What happened
During the night, sometime between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m., an amateur astronomer was observing the Andromeda galaxy when they noticed an object with the naked eye. It was moving at a steady speed along a north–south line. After a few moments its path changed abruptly: it veered toward the north-northwest and then went back toward the north. It made no sound and gave off no light, and it was brownish-brown in colour. The witness's sketch shows a barrel shape. The sighting lasted about one minute.
A careful inquiry was carried out with nearby airfields and with civil and military authorities. Neither the review of air traffic nor the radar records made it possible to link the sighting to any aircraft. The phenomenon therefore remained unexplained, and GEIPAN classified it as D.
