Sighting in Carentan, July 28, 2012

Manche, Normandie, France

Sighting on July 28, 2012 in Carentan (Manche, France). GEIPAN identified the phenomenon with certainty: it was a bright star (class A).

What happened

The witness reported these events more than two years after the observation. At about 11 p.m., from their window, they noticed a point of light in the sky that shifted between red, yellow and green, and that intrigued them. It did not move. After a few seconds, the witness photographed it and saw that the picture showed three points forming a triangle. The object then disappeared, and four points appeared in its place. The sky was clear, the sighting lasted only a few minutes, and no other witness came forward.

The investigation established that the witness had photographed a point-like light twice, a few seconds apart. In the direction the witness indicated, Arcturus, Saturn and Mars were visible. Comparing photograph no. 2 with the surroundings of Arcturus left no doubt that this star was what appeared in the image. Its disappearance and reappearance are explained by clouds present that evening. The three points on photograph no. 1, where Arcturus should have produced a single light, result from the instability of the camera held by hand. The color changes can be explained by atmospheric turbulence. GEIPAN classified the case as A: a misidentification of the star Arcturus.
